Mounds State Park |
Mounds State Park, located off I-69 east
of Anderson, features 10 unique "earthworks" built by a group
of prehistoric Indians known as the Adena-Hopewell people. The
largest earthwork, the "Great Mound", is believed to have been
constructed around 160 B.C. Archaeological surveys seem to
indicate it was used as a gathering place for religious ceremonies.
The nature Center and Park Office are located inside the new Visitors Center which opened in 2003. The Visitors Center is open year round. The Bronnenberg House, one of the oldest
buildings in Madison County, is opened for special programs by the
Interpretive Service.
